Computer Project for Special Needs (AM)2

In this project, volunteers will assist young adults and children with special needs in learning a variety of fun and practical computer skills. The course has been specially designed for persons with special needs and is a great opportunity to interact closely with the special needs community in a unique and fun way!

Can Heart Computer School (bottom of the stairs)

Event Guidelines: You must be over 18 years old. You also need to have some basic Japanese skills to communicate with the participants.

Bowling (Tokyo Port Bowl) 2

Sunday, April 14    09:30 - 12:00

In this project, you will bowl a few games with young adults with intellectual disabilities (not physical). The athletes are part of the Special Olympics Nippon Bowling Team. A Special Olympics coach will be overseeing each team (two lanes). They will maintain the pace and coach the athletes in the team. You will be placed in a team along with 4-5 athletes with mild disabilities. As a volunteer, we would like you to interact with the athletes while you bowl about 3 games. One way to interact is to help them understand/follow bowling rules. Another way is to talk to them during the game to increase their social and communication skills. Also, please encourage them if they are not bowling well and celebrate when they do play well. Don’t forget to have fun!

Location: Tokyo Port Bowl 7th floor

6-minute walk from Tamachi Station (JR Yamanote, Keihin Tohoku Line)
6-minute walk from Mita Station Exit 6 (Toei Mita, Asakusa Line)

Meeting Time: Please arrive at the site by 9:30 AM. The program is from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM, but we are asking all volunteers to attend a mandatory orientation session from 9:30 AM.

What to wear / bring :
- Long pants or sports pants. No Jeans, short pants, skirts
- Collared shirts. No sleeveless shirts
- Socks. (DON’T FORGET!)
- Bowling shoes. You can rent them for 300 yen if you don’t have.
- Please avoid long, fake nails.
- Please avoid wearing accessories (earrings, cap, watch, locker key, etc.) during the game.

Event Guidelines:
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Need to understand basic Japanese. Must have experience with the Special Olympics Program and must have bowling experience.

Blind Jogging (2)

Sunday, April 14    09:00 - 12:00

We will be assisting visually challenged runners and walkers in Yoyogi Park. For a visually challenged individual, it is the most liberating experience to be able to run. This is made possible through the aide of running guides. In this program, volunteers will be guides for visually challenged runners and walkers.

Time: 9:00 - 12:00
*In order to arrive on time, please confirm the meeting location in advance.

Meeting Location: JR Harajuku station, Omotesando exit

Venue: Yoyogi Park

What to bring: Water, towel, running clothes and shoes

REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to run and walk for at least 1 hour (4-5 km)
- Basic Japanese (left, right, stop, let's take a break etc.)
*Volunteers must be at least 15 years old.

Basketball (Beginners, Intermediate Women) - Hachimanyama(2)

In this project, you will help young athletes in elementary school and young women's athletes with intellectual disabilities (not physical) enjoy the game of basketball. You will help them practice basic basketball skills and help them understand the rules of the game. They enjoy getting a lot of encouragement and cheering while they practice.

Location: Tokyo Metropolitan Comprehensive Mental Health Center (Tokyo-toritsu Chubu Sogo Seishin Hoken Fukushi Center)
** The closest station to the gymnasium is Hachimanyama Station.

Guidelines: Volunteers must be at least 8 years old. All volunteers under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Japanese conversation skills are required. Have experience playing Basketball more than a year. We ask that you respect the directions of the Special Olympics Coaches and the Volunteer Leader.

What to wear: Sportswear. No Jeans. (There is a locker room you may use on-site.)
Avoid long, fake nails. No accessories ( earrings, cap, watch, locker key, etc )

In this project, you will help young men's athletes with intellectual disabilities (not physical) enjoy the game of basketball and practice intermediate/advanced basketball skills (Varsity, Junior Varsity). Many high school basketball players from international schools come to support the athletes.

Location: Tokyo Metropolitan Comprehensive Mental Health Center (Tokyo-toritsu Chubu Sogo Seishin Hoken Fukushi Center)
** The closest station to the gymnasium is Hachimanyama Station.

Event Guidelines: Volunteers must be at least 15 years old and must be able to play basketball (Varsity, Junior Varsity). Need to understand basic Japanese. Volunteer must have experience with SONT Basketball (Beginners) project. We ask that you respect the directions of the Special Olympics Coaches and the Volunteer Leader.

What to wear: Sportswear. No Jeans. (There is a locker room you may use on-site.)
Avoid long, fake nails. No accessories ( earrings, cap, watch, locker key, etc )

English Conversation Program at Kibo-no-Ie

In this project, we will provide the children of children's home (from the first grade student in elementary school to second grade student in junior high school) an opportunity to learning English and to keep their interest in learning the language.
