Dance Volunteer Project - TRCS

In this project, volunteers will practice dancing with children who have special needs, from the Dance Laboratory and Futaba Association. You will be supporting them in their efforts to dance and stretch each other and having a fun time. It is okay if you can not dance.

English conversation for the visually impaired

This is an English conversation class for about 15 adult students who are visually impaired. The lead teacher has developed a program fit for the visually impaired. You will have the opportunity to chat with the students and share your experiences with them.

KoKo Club (Academy Meidai)

Bowling (Tokyo Port Bowl)

Sunday, December 8    09:30 - 12:00

In this project, you will bowl a few games with young adults with intellectual disabilities (not physical). The athletes are part of the Special Olympics Nippon Bowling Team. A Special Olympics coach will be overseeing each team (two lanes). They will maintain the pace and coach the athletes in the team. You will be placed in a team along with 4-5 athletes with mild disabilities. As a volunteer, we would like you to interact with the athletes while you bowl about 3 games. One way to interact is to help them understand/follow bowling rules. Another way is to talk to them during the game to increase their social and communication skills. Also, please encourage them if they are not bowling well and celebrate when they do play well. Don’t forget to have fun!

Basketball (Beginners, Intermediate Women) - Hachimanyama(1)

In this project, you will help young athletes in elementary school and young women's athletes with intellectual disabilities (not physical) enjoy the game of basketball. You will help them practice basic basketball skills and help them understand the rules of the game. They enjoy getting a lot of encouragement and cheering while they practice.

Location: Tokyo Metropolitan Comprehensive Mental Health Center (Tokyo-toritsu Chubu Sogo Seishin Hoken Fukushi Center)
** The closest station to the gymnasium is Hachimanyama Station.

Guidelines: Volunteers must be at least 8 years old. All volunteers under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Japanese conversation skills are required. Have experience playing Basketball more than a year. We ask that you respect the directions of the Special Olympics Coaches and the Volunteer Leader.

What to wear: Sportswear. No Jeans. (There is a locker room you may use on-site.)
Avoid long, fake nails. No accessories ( earrings, cap, watch, locker key, etc )

Many high school basketball players from international schools come to support the athletes.

Blind Jogging (1)

We will be assisting visually challenged runners and walkers in Yoyogi Park. For a visually challenged individual, it is the most liberating experience to be able to run. This is made possible through the aide of running guides. In this program, volunteers will be guides for visually challenged runners and walkers.

What to bring: Water, towel, running clothes and shoes

REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to run and walk for at least 1 hour (4-5 km)

Decorating Project for the infants' home children

Monday, December 9    10:30 - 12:00

There are about 30 infants (0 – 3 years of age) living at Saiseikai Infants’ Home. These infants cannot live with their families due to a variety of reasons - the most prominent reason being financial. In this project we will be making birthday decorations for the Seisaikai Infants home. The home organizes birthday events every month for the children and volunteers can enjoy taking part in making the decorations that will be used, such as arts and crafts.

Time/Place: Please be at the Hands On Tokyo office by 10:30.

“Fun with English” Project (Special Needs Aiiku Gakuen) 3

In this project, we will have fun activities (in English) with children who have various disabilities, including autism.

Tango Therapy Project (Musashisakai)

Tango will be taught by instructors at the elderly care center. They will support the elderly during the dance as to avoid any accidents. The dance will be very simple and easy. It will be a good activity to move along with music!
This time, we will have a Christmas-themed program

Gardening and Ground maintenance at Saiseikai Infants' Home (3)

In the past, Hands On Tokyo has renovated their playground and built a small garden for the infants living there to enjoy. In this project, we will maintain the garden and ground at the Infants' Home.

Seicho Special Support School - PC

The Seicho Support School is a school for mentally challenged students, who have graduated from junior high-schools in the Setagaya Ward. In this project, volunteers will assist pupils with special needs in learning a variety of fun and practical computer skills. The course has been specially designed for persons with special needs and is a great opportunity to interact closely with the special needs community in a unique and fun way!

Event Guidelines: You must be over 18 years old and have enough energy to keep up with the teen-participants. Basic Japanese communication skills are required, like “Please click here” or “Let's enter” etc.

What to wear/bring:
- Please wear comfortable and appropriate clothing. Overexposure had arisen concerns in the past.
- Please refrain from wearing earrings, rings and necklaces with big stones and nail extensions, to ensure the safety of the children.
- Please refrain from wearing strong perfume, as some children may be sensitive to smells.

*Each student has its own characteristics (difficult to hear, difficult to speak etc.) Please check to the notice of the student you will be in charge from the volunteer leader.
