Bowling (Tokyo Port Bowl) 2

Monday, September 23    09:30 - 12:00

In this project, you will bowl a few games with young adults with intellectual disabilities (not physical). The athletes are part of the Special Olympics Nippon Bowling Team. A Special Olympics coach will be overseeing each team (two lanes). They will maintain the pace and coach the athletes in the team. You will be placed in a team along with 4-5 athletes with mild disabilities. As a volunteer, we would like you to interact with the athletes while you bowl about 3 games. One way to interact is to help them understand/follow bowling rules. Another way is to talk to them during the game to increase their social and communication skills. Also, please encourage them if they are not bowling well and celebrate when they do play well. Don’t forget to have fun!

Arisu no Mori Smile Project (4)

In this project volunteers will be playing, singing, and going to the park with the seniors. Hand massage will be performed if time allows. Guest performers will also be invited. All the residents have Alzheimer (from slight to severe).

Escort Children with Special Needs Project (2)

The children from Aiiku Yogo School (a private special needs school) go to a pool in Hamamatsucho. We would like to ask you to help transport the children to swimming venue. When escorting them, please be aware of car traffic, bicycles, distracted pedestrians, as the children have a tendency to run off quickly. Tango Therapy Project (Higashiyamato)

Tango will be taught by instructors at the facility for mentally challenged people. They will support them during the dance as to avoid any accidents. The dance will be very simple and easy. It will be a good activity to move along with music!

The Seicho Support School is a school for mentally challenged students, who have graduated from junior high-schools in the Setagaya Ward. In this project, volunteers will assist pupils with special needs in learning a variety of fun and practical computer skills. The course has been specially designed for persons with special needs and is a great opportunity to interact closely with the special needs community in a unique and fun way!

In this project, you will help junior & high school students and recent graduates with visual impairment who are members of Tokyo Miracle Stars, Blind Tennis Club. You will also help the students enjoy the game of tennis and learn the skills necessary to play the game.

Time: Please meet us at Ayase station (JR Line, Chiyoda Line), East exit at 8:30 AM, and we will walk to the site together. The program is from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

Decorating Project for the infants' home children

There are about 30 infants (0 – 3 years of age) living at Saiseikai Infants’ Home. These infants cannot live with their families due to a variety of reasons - the most prominent reason being financial. In this project we will be making birthday decorations for the Seisaikai Infants home. The home organizes birthday events every month for the children and volunteers can enjoy taking part in making the decorations that will be used, such as arts and crafts.

Decorating Project for the infants' home children (2)

Monday, October 14    10:30 - 12:00

There are about 30 infants (0 – 3 years of age) living at Saiseikai Infants’ Home. These infants cannot live with their families due to a variety of reasons - the most prominent reason being financial. In this project we will be making birthday decorations for the Seisaikai Infants home. The home organizes birthday events every month for the children and volunteers can enjoy taking part in making the decorations that will be used, such as arts and crafts.

Time/Place: Please be at the Hands On Tokyo office by 10:30.

Dance Volunteer Project - TRCS (2)

In this project, volunteers will practice dancing with children who have special needs, from the Dance Laboratory and Futaba Association. You will be supporting them in their efforts to dance and stretch each other and having a fun time.
It is okay if you can not dance.

Bowling (Tokyo Port Bowl) 4

Sunday, October 27    09:30 - 12:00

In this project, you will bowl a few games with young adults with intellectual disabilities (not physical). The athletes are part of the Special Olympics Nippon Bowling Team. A Special Olympics coach will be overseeing each team (two lanes). They will maintain the pace and coach the athletes in the team. You will be placed in a team along with 4-5 athletes with mild disabilities. As a volunteer, we would like you to interact with the athletes while you bowl about 3 games. One way to interact is to help them understand/follow bowling rules. Another way is to talk to them during the game to increase their social and communication skills. Also, please encourage them if they are not bowling well and celebrate when they do play well. Don’t forget to have fun!

Meeting Time: Please arrive at the site by 9:30 AM. The program is from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM, but we are asking all volunteers to attend a mandatory orientation session from 9:30 AM.

- Long pants or sports pants. No Jeans, short pants, skirts
- Collared shirts. No sleeveless shirts
- Socks. (DON’T FORGET!)
- Bowling shoes. You can rent them for 300 yen if you don’t have.
- Please avoid long, fake nails.
- Please avoid wearing accessories (earrings, cap, watch, locker key, etc.) during the game.

Event Guidelines:
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Need to understand basic Japanese. Must have experience with the Special Olympics Program and must have bowling experience.
